We woke to clouds and more rain, not the day for a viewpoint especially one which cost 42euros for 3 of them and 63euros if I went to (obviously I was happy to save the money and let them go alone!!)
So a journey day it was, off we set, headed for the famous Grossglockner pass.
Thankfully when we arrived at the pass the weather had cleared up, it costs 32 euros to get through unless you are pedalling a bike and when you see them pedalling its is worth every cent!
The views were spectacular, so many stops on the way with play parks, museums etc to keep the journey broken up. One stop had a detour to the highest viewpoint (bikers nest) at 3,000m this is the one which we arrived at lunchtime and could smell something tasty coming from the restaurant so we treated ourselves to a kaiserschmarrn and apfel strudel - delicious definitely a highlight for me!!
From there it is pretty much downhill but the views of the highest peak, the glacier - just epic!
Once off the pass we headed for Lake Molveno - finally in Italy, this calls for a pizza. We stopped and ate like kings, Amelie had the largest schnitzel known to man and the rest of us pizza.
It was getting late - too late to find a camp site so instead we found a parking spot with spectacular views (its all about the views) of the mountains with a play park down below which had a spring to fill our water bottles - perfect.
There was an Italian camper there so parking must be fine.
We sat out to try and see some stars, but the clouds came over & ruined that, then all of sudden between two mountains a light shone, which grew larger and larger till we realised it was actually the moon rising. It seemed to roll up the mountainside as it rose up and across the sky, that was definitely worth waiting for!
