From Koln we headed for Spangenberg to visit the castle Rich's grandfather Vining spent WW2 organising the escape committee. We'd heard the stories so often now it was time to find the castle where it all happened.
When we arrived the village was deserted so we headed for the castle, formerly a hotel/restaurant & currently just a museum - but only on Sundays - so also deserted.
We walked around and took photos and noticed that one of the windows was open and then someone closed it, there was life in the old dog yet. We tried to ring the bell in the hope we may get a look inside, but to no avail. So we walked round some more and Rich & Amelie found an almost way in and just as we were giving up the cleaner came out to leave, she told us it was closed up, but we asked to see inside the courtyard and surprisingly she let us - result!
Later we found a pizzeria in town which was just fantastic, and decided as there was no camp site in the genera area that we'd wild camp up by the castle, it was amazing (if a little spooky!) but the view from the back of the van was just stunning and worth risking the possibility of being thrown out!!
